Known as the real-life Tony Stark, Elon Musk is a real life tech billionaire with his fingers in many pies – founder, CEO, and designer of SpaceX, co-founder, CEO and product architect of Tesla Inc, co-founder and CEO of Neuralink, co-founder of The Boring Company, co-founder and co-chairman of OpenAI, and co-founder of PayPal.
Before he became one of the world’s richest and most powerful men, Musk was a young boy who was born (June 28th 1971) and raised in Pretoria, South Africa. His mom, Maye Musk was a model and dietician originally from Canada and his dad, Errol Musk, was a South African electromechanical engineer, pilot, and sailor. He also has a younger brother, Kimbal, and sister, Tosca.
Early life was by no means easy for Elon Musk, a highly intelligent bookworm who taught himself computer programming at the age of 10. He was severely bullied and once was even hospitalized after a group of boys threw him down a flight of stairs and then smashed his head into the pavement until he lost consciousness. Needless to say, once he finished school, Musk set his eyes on greater things and moved to Canada at the tender age of 17 to attend Queen’s University. Two years later he transferred to the University of Pennsylvania where he received an economics degree and a degree in physics. He went on to begin a Ph.D in applied physics and material sciences but dropped out after just two days in order to become an entrepreneur – and so began the building of his empire.
A Day in the Life of Elon Musk
Worth a whopping estimated $22.3 billion, Musk’s dream is to change the world. He plans to do this by reducing global warming through sustainable energy and establishing a colony on Mars. This billionaire is an eccentric force to be reckoned with and has a daily schedule that is not for the faint hearted. We decided to take a look at a day in the life of Elon Musk.
Despite a ridiculously busy schedule, Musk sleeps about five or six hours per night and wakes up around 7am. He usually skips breakfast but reportedly never skips his morning shower. From there it’s all go-go-go! Musk is well-known for breaking his day into 5-minute intervals which he says optimizes his efficiency and leaves little room for time-wasting. Sticking to his theme of efficiency, Musk avoids phone calls whenever possible, preferring to rely on email or text.
He only has productive meetings and has been known to remove people who do not contribute. Lunch time is often during one of these meetings where he scoffs down his food in five minutes before carrying on with his schedule. In total, Musk works about 85 to 100 hours per week, with 80% of that time spent on engineering and design. He spends Mondays and Fridays at SpaceX in Los Angeles and Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at Tesla in the Bay Area. He also makes sure to spend about half a day working at the AI non-profit OpenAI. Musk also hits the gym once or twice a week somewhere in between the chaos, and says he gets most of his calories in during business dinners. He also spends some time playing with his five sons – whilst checking his emails.
We’re not sure Musk has his work-life balance quite sorted but hey, when you’re worth $22.3 billion dollars you can do whatever the heck you want!
