The World’s Youngest Lottery Winners

We all want to win the lottery, but imagine winning the lotto jackpot just as you finish high school, or as you are working through your gap year, trying to figure out your life. Many wonder if it is a good thing to allow such young adults to win such large amounts of money, nervous of the repercussions and lack of financial maturity. Here we have a few of the world’s youngest lottery winners for you to catch a glimpse into their life-changing stories and see just how responsible, or irresponsible, they have been with their lucky winnings.

Stuart Donnelly
Stuart won way back when in 1997 when he was just 17. He scooped up £2 million from a £25 million split jackpot. He was a trainee pharmacist assistant from Scotland and soon after winning, quit his job and went on a bit of a spending spree. Granted, his spending spree was mostly about helping others, buying his parents each a house, taking friends on vacation, and donating £15 000 to a hospital where is brother had been receiving treatment for a rare genetic disorder. He also invested some money and bought himself two properties. However, over the years he became a recluse, saying that he struggled with all the attention he was getting. Sadly, in 2010 at the age of 29, Stuart Donnelly was found dead in his home after having written up an in depth will dividing his still-wealthy assests.

Callie Rogers

Callie became Britain’s youngest lottery winner, claiming a £1.9 million jackpot in 2003, when she was just 16. She had been in foster care after her parents split and immediately gave up her checkout job which paid just £3.60 and went on a crazy spending spree. She splashed out on fancy houses, plastic surgery, parties and drugs. Feeling empty and alone, and nearly broke by the end of the year, she tried to commit suicide but was found by her family and made it through. She has since turned her life around and has said that she is happier now with less money in the bank and less stress.

Ianthe Fullagar

Ianthe was a regular girl from Cumbria, working as a waitress for £4.75 an hour when she bought a EuroMillions ticket. In 2008, at the young age of 18, she won £7.5 million and celebrated with cider and her favourite baked beans on toast. Ianthe is one young winner with her head on her shoulders. She planned to continue with her plans to study law after her gap year and perhaps one day open her own law firm. She told officials that she had worked hard to get where she was and had no intention of dropping her plans. Thanks to her wisdom and great planning, Ianthe Fullagar was recognised as the 27th richest person in the UK in 2010, with a networth of around £10.5 million.

Robert Salo
Robert was just a high school senior in 2012 when he paid $2 for a New York Lottery “Win for Life” scratch-off ticket and won $1000 a week for the rest of his life. This young high schooler, who hails from Brooklyn, had no plans to party or blow his money but has said that we will follow his dream of studying to become an electrical engineer, and buy a car. With such a win, he is guaranteed to receive the minimum payment of $1 million over 20 years and if he lives until 80, he’ll collect over $3 million! The good news is there is no recent news on Robert, meaning he probably followed his dreams, staying away from parties and frivolous spending and therefor, staying out of the tabloids.

Matt Topham and Cassey Carrington

Matt and Cassey may not be the youngest at 22 years of age, but they definitely won one of the biggest jackpots. In February 2012 the high school sweethearts won the $45 million EuroMillions jackpot. Their immediate plans were to leave their current jobs, buy a modest house, and to help out their family and good friends. Matt and Cassey also bought two fancy cars and decided to get married, having a modest wedding that September at the Clumber Park Hotel and Spa – the very place where they stayed before they went public with their EuroMillions jackpot win.

They went off the radar for a while but popped back up after the birth of their son, Alfie, in 2014. The two then announced their plan to buy a landmark mansion in Nottingham and renovate it. The mansion backs Wollaton Hall which was used as Wayne Manor the Batman film The Dark Knight Rises and has apparently fallen into absolute disarray as the couple never moved in. They seem level headed enough and living a comfortable and happy life, we just can’t help but wonder what they plan to do with the now derelict property.
